ABOUT
Established in 2026, the Hong Kong Palaeontology Research Centre is a Hong Kong-based, internationally-oriented organisation dedicated to palaeontological research and science education.
ACADEMIC RESEARCH AS THE CORE
The Centre focuses on palaeontological research alongside the creation, integration, and dissemination of palaeontological knowledge. Rather than relying solely on existing literature, our work stems from active academic research, first-hand fieldwork, and professional training. Founded and led by a Hong Kong-born palaeontologist, the Centre’s research directions, scientific content, and educational frameworks are shaped by a scholar with international experience who remains active in frontier research and peer-reviewed publishing.
SCIENTIST-LED
The Centre operates on a lean, flexible, project-based model. Core research, scientific oversight, and educational content are driven directly by our founder. Research initiatives are carried out through a long-term, global collaborative network of palaeontologists, universities, museums, and research institutions. When projects require specific expertise, we partner with local event organisers, education support staff, and specialised professionals to ensure our educational and consultancy work is delivered with rigorous efficacy.
CONNECTING THE PUBLIC WITH PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE
We believe high-quality science education should do more than just introduce facts. It should help students and the public understand how knowledge is discovered, tested, and established by scientists. Consequently, we translate our field experiences and research findings directly into educational content. This allows the Hong Kong public to engage with palaeontology grounded in authentic research—bringing up-to-date, inspiring natural history education and experience to our city.
LOGO
The logo of the Hong Kong Palaeontology Research Centre is inspired by the fossil fish Bothriolepis. Discovered in 1980 within the northeastern New Territories, these specimens were found in some of Hong Kong's oldest rocks, dating back approximately 400 million years. This landmark discovery marks a significant starting point in Hong Kong's geological history. Furthermore, it provides critical clues for studying connections between early vertebrates in Asia and their counterparts worldwide, as well as broader patterns of global biogeographical dispersal.

Dr Fion Ma is a vertebrate palaeontologist from Hong Kong. She specialises in using digital modelling to study the anatomy, ecology, and evolution of vertebrates, including dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Her fieldwork has taken her to regions such as the Gobi Desert, the Tianshan Mountains, and the Gangdise Mountains, complemented by extensive collection-based research in international museums. She has published over a dozen peer-reviewed papers, with her scientific discoveries and commentary featured by the BBC, National Geographic, and The New York Times. Dr Ma has contributed to the naming of several new extinct species, including Kunpengopterus antipollicatus (‘Monkeydactyl’), a flying reptile notable as the oldest known animal with opposable thumbs, a find selected by Science News as one of the “6 surprising records science set in 2021”. She is also widely known for her research on “Baby Yingliang,” one of the most complete dinosaur embryos ever discovered, which Smithsonian Magazine selected as a top ten dinosaur discovery of 2022.
Beyond academic research, Dr Ma has long been dedicated to science education and communication. During her research training and professional tenure in the United Kingdom and the United States, she participated in training on science communication, Earth science pedagogy, fossil preparation and conservation, and exhibition curation, translating her research expertise into public engagement. She is frequently invited to lecture at universities, primary and secondary schools, and public organisations. Since returning to Hong Kong, she has balanced her active research with developing innovative educational programmes for local students and contributing to museum development and exhibition planning. In 2026, she founded the Hong Kong Palaeontology Research Centre to transform frontier palaeontological research into accessible, immersive, and inspiring natural history education and experiences for the community.
